St. Luke's Health Plan

When trust ensures the right care.

In a moment of crisis, one client didn’t know where to turn but she knew she trusted St. Luke’s. This story shows how care and community can change a life.

A client recently reached out to our Chief Operations Officer (COO) for help with a difficult and vulnerable situation. One of her employees was struggling with a long-term drug addiction that had begun to impact his health, family and work. He had tried to manage it on his own through support groups, but those efforts were no longer enough. He was ready for medical treatment but didn’t know where to begin.

She wanted to help but felt uncertain about the right next step. Should he go to the emergency room or connect with a primary care provider? They needed clear guidance to make sure he could access the right care, quickly and safely.

We're here to help

Typically in a moment like this, an insurance carrier would not be the first call. But St. Luke’s is different. We’re part of this community. We live here. We work alongside our neighbors. And our brand isn’t just a name on an insurance card — it’s a trusted promise. She knew we’d answer.

Our COO asked if her employee be willing to hear from our clinical team. Without hesitation, she said yes. Within minutes, our COO connected this gentleman with our utilization management team, who jumped into action to support navigating the system, walking through his benefits and finding an in-network treatment center ready to help immediately. Just hours after that first call, he had completed a pre-evaluation and was scheduled to check in for his needed care the next morning.

That night, our COO received a tearful voicemail from our client. Her voice was filled with relief and gratitude. She told our COO that she couldn’t imagine another health plan responding so quickly — or even being a place she’d feel safe calling in such a moment.

Your partner in health

For our client, this wasn’t just about getting one person into treatment. It was about saving a family. And for us, it was a reminder that we care for our neighbors with urgency and compassion, filling the needed gaps to be our community’s most trusted partner in health.
