St. Luke's Health Plan

Patient safety depends on timely access to care and medication.
St. Luke’s integrated model breaks down barriers. By aligning leadership around shared accountability for outcomes, we build trust, enable faster problem solving and keep the focus where it belongs: on the person who needs care.
Recently, the St. Luke’s Health Plan Chief Medical Officer (CMO) received a call from a local physician—desperately seeking assistance. The physician was caring for a patient insured by another health plan and had been trying, unsuccessfully, for weeks to resolve an issue preventing the patient from accessing a critical prescription. During that time, the patient went without the medication they needed to stay healthy and out of the Emergency Department.
Despite repeated outreach, the physician and the patient experienced minimal engagement and no resolution. With no options left, the physician reached out to our CMO—not because the patient was a St. Luke’s Health Plan member, but because of the trust he has built within the physician community and his reputation for caring deeply about patient outcomes.
Within minutes of receiving the call, our CMO connected directly with the clinical team at the other health plan and helped remove the barriers that had been standing in the way. The patient received their medication.
- Patient safety depends on timely access to care and medication. Delays—especially when someone is already vulnerable—can have real, serious consequences.
- Psychological safety and trust matter. The fact that a physician thought to call our CMO in a moment of desperation speaks volumes about who we are as an organization. It reflects the relationships we’ve built, the credibility of our leaders, and our shared commitment to people over process.
- This story highlights how traditional health care structures can unintentionally create silos and friction between physicians and payors—often at the expense of the patient. In contrast, our integrated model breaks down those barriers. By aligning clinical and health plan leadership around shared accountability for outcomes, we build trust, enable faster problem‑solving, and keep the focus where it belongs: on the person who needs care.
This story had nothing to do with our plan operations—and everything to do with our values. It reminds us that what truly differentiates St. Luke’s isn’t just what we do, but how we show up, even when there’s nothing in it for us.
